A Western trillium (Trillium ovatum) grows amid a wide variety of vegetation that survives in the dim light of a coastal British Columbia forest. Giant trees, dripping from a recent, cool rain, tower over the small plants, leaving the understory in persistent shade. Red huckleberry and sword fern are two other shade-tolerant and moisture-loving plants that appear in this frame. Note the spider hanging from a nearby web. Little arachnids were present around nearly every trillium.
