Artist's Description

Tall, narrow Douglas-firs ( Pseudotsuga menziesii ) compete for light and space in this young, regenerating stand. Owing to their tall, narrow forms, trees of this nature are vulnerable to wind and snow loading. However, the closely-packed trees also shelter and support each other, with the trees along the edge becoming more stout and wind-firm. It is when the stand is opened up, either by human activity or natural disturbance, exposing the weaker core trees, that a forest such as this can be completely wind-thrown even by a modest storm.
