A Nocturnal Encounter

The night was beautiful. Soft and warm and scented with jasmine and promise.

High above, the moon was a shimmering silver apple. Almost full, it had been nibbled by the Goddess of the Night, her platinum hair drifting on an unseen zephyr and her eyes, the colour of the night sky, glittering with reflected starlight.

Fully naked, I relished in the sensation of cottony grass between my toes and the light breeze on my skin. Feet apart and arms outstretched, I closed my eyes and let the breath of the Goddess flow around and through me. Like stepping into a still pool on a hot day, I sank into dark silence and utter peace.

Somewhere, far off, a siren sounded, lilting and haunting in the heavy air.

It got quite a lot louder before stopping abruptly. Two policemen came cautiously through the back gate. One of them encouraged me to use his hat as a makeshift fig leaf while the other delivered a stern lecture on the charges that could be laid on an overweight, hirsute, middle-aged man exposing himself in a backyard that faced multi-storey apartments on two sides…

They left without further incident.

Feeling terribly exposed after the first policeman had demanded his hat back, I turned swiftly to retreat inside. An arm of my old hills hoist smacked straight into my eye. Stumbling toward the back door clutching my face, I blindly kicked the back step with my bare foot, causing me to drop to knees which scraped painfully on the other, concrete, steps.

I sat on the couch, fully clothed. An ice-pack covered one eye. A splint decorated one foot. Rolled-up trouser legs exposed knees bathed in Bettadine. I switched on the telly in time to catch a 30-minute infomercial on the 76th Revolutionary New Stomach Tightening Machine To Hit The Market This Month.

Outside, the moon hung, aloof, non-judgemental and still nibbled. The Goddess sniggered, causing leaves to rustle in amusement. In a café somewhere, two policemen laughed hysterically over coffee and donuts.

Bloody neighbours.
