In Trafalga Square, London there is a fourth, empty plinth. It has been empty for two hundred years. Recently the art world have started putting contempory art up on it and Anthony Gormley, won the bid to put work on the plinth. His project, One and other, is putting everyday people, chosen at random by a computer, on the plinth for an hour, every hour, for a hundred days. Portrait of Britain.
Last night I went to Trafalga Square for an all evening/night sketch in! Why? Well I want to paint/ document what is going on the plinth for my 2nd year degree work. Turn the human sculptures – which is being debated ‘Is it Art?’, into painting.
You can see me in the live video web cam!!! google One and Other, see Plinthers, Monday Monday 3rd August at 2am,3am, 4am, and 6am. when they pan across the square!!!! Dont miss the message that the 3am Plinther puts up on his board about ten minutes in !!!
I am putting up three of my sketches.
It was a wonderful atmosphere in the square. First it was buzzing with people. We were lucky to have had a wonderfully clear and warm night. Quite rare for our part of the world. When I was sketching the charcoal one, a crowd of teenage hoodies, rollerbladers arrived. Set up beside me, I was obviously in their spot, and proceeded to do the most intricate manouvers on their blades. They were polite and interested in what I was doing. Just great. I met some really wonderful people from all over the world, India, Dubai, Russia,Canada who all came to see what I was doing. Later it quietened down to just the bladers, the homeless people, the plinthers supporters and me, with the security men and police presence.
The sunrise was amazing. I have to go again.
