Knife, oil painting, translating a photograph, by Mark Richards, of rural Oxfordshire, England (see credit, below). Using various knife techniques, I was able to bring texture and life to the painted scene. It was a challenge and joy to paint.

I was taken by the beauty of this rolling land, and the purple hills in the distance, the gorgeous blue sky, worn path, and livestock gate.

In Texas, we call these cattle guards. Oxfordshire has a sheep on its coat of arms; so perhaps this is a sheep guard. On Chincoteague (Island), Virginia, they are for wild horses, so that they don’t trot into town; not that that wouldn’t cause some excitement. I’ve alway loved gates such as these, because it doesn’t get more “country” than this.

“Rural Oxfordshire” was started and finished during Solo Exhibition’s – Landscape and Light Workshop, under a written contract with Mark Richards, and with great support from fellow participants. Mark’s photograph, my reference, is below.
