Landscape mode on iPad Cases - buyers' choice?

Monday. August 4, 2014

Should Buyers have a choice of landscape image ipad cases rotated “right” or “left”?

I invite you to, scan through this illustrated research that I put together after wondering aloud with Kasia D. which is the correct way?

Neither Kasia or I own an iPad. Kasia went by the RedBubble pictures in their iPad Case help and I went by some initial research on real-world use. We came to different conclusions, initially.

I had rotated my Cruising the Seine image right in Photoshop Elements, before uploading it. Although left seemed more natural to me, I changed it to right after my initial research at the time.

In Kasia’s workshop studio @ solo exhibition, she showcases an iPad case with an image rotated left, for landscape mode.

…And that got us wondering, gee, which way IS the proper direction to face the image for landscape mode?

So I did more research!

As it turns out, the rotation that is best, apparently, totally 100% depends on the user, and how THEY normally rotate their iPad. If they rotate it LEFT, then they would need a landscape image rotated RIGHT. If they rotate it RIGHT, they would need a landscape image rotated LEFT (because it’s on the opposite side).

Confused yet?

This is not a choice yet for buyers. But it is the buyers who determine which side is right side up for the person seeing them at work or play on their tablet.

Thus, for those of us uploading images in landscape mode for the iPad, I believe we either need up to 3 views to offer (portrait, landscape-right, landscape-left); or better yet, RB should probably offer rotation options to the buyers of any cases with landscape images loaded, especially.

Please feel free to review my research summary below, if you like, and tell me what you think.

If you have an iPad, please share whether you rotate right or left as you are viewing the screen in landscape mode; or if it depends. (If you rotate right, your Home Button is on the left. If you rotate left, your Home button is on the right.)

Finally, how would you want to handle a buyer’s choice for image rotated right or left, depending on the way the buyer uses their device?

The iPad images are from Apple’s iPad users guide, a pdf. The rest, including everything in red, and the kitty sketch, is mine.
