Well, thanks so much to everyone who answered my plea for opinions about the background of this commission! For those who wanted to know how he turned out, what I’ve done is:
added another thin wash of yellow ochre, then added a mucky green at the bottom, made with ultramarine, cadmium yellow and burn umber and then a couple of thin layers of burn sienna around his head and ears. All this was done in very thin layers as I was so scared of wrecking the whole thing and dried off in between with the hairdryer! I like the touch of burnt sienna, it adds a warm pinky glow, I think.
Now all that remains is to e-mail it to the client and see if she likes it! Help!
Acrylic on 425 gm watercolour paper (very heavy).
But anyway, many, many thanks!
It may not look much different, but I’m finally happy with it – I think?
