Artist's Description

This is a view of Appledore IV with S/V Denis Sullivan in the distance (to the left) moving up the Saginaw River toward Bay City, Bay County, Michigan, US. This was the Parade of Sails (July 11, 2013), the official entrance of the tall ship fleet to start the Tall Ship® Celebration, part of the Tall Ships Challenge® Great Lakes 2013. This photograph was taken from the western approach of a railroad bridge just down river from Liberty Bridge near downtown Bay City, the eventual docking area for the fleet along both banks of the river.

Appledore IV is a steel-hulled gaff rigged schooner launched in 1989. It’s owned and operated by BaySail, with the home port in Bay City, Bay County, Michigan, US.

S/V Denis Sullivan is a Gaff rigged Schooner. She is a Flagship of both the state of Wisconsin and of the United Nations Environment Programme.

I used Corel® Painter Photo Essentials 4 to ‘paint’ my original photograph. Normally, I do not edit my photos very much. Mostly I’ll simply straighten, crop, then use a one-step enhancement. For this photo painting, I saved using the ‘excellent’ quality option, and set it as a ‘progressive’ file for online loading purposes.

The settings I used were:
Canvas Color: Red: 249, Green: 235, Blue: 204
Hue: 28, Sat: 189, Lum: 213

Brush Size: 1.6, Opacity: 10%, Grain: 50%

Smart Blur: 0%, Edge: -, Color: Saturate, Paper: Handmade, Brush: 2B Pencil

Random Strokes: Shape: Scribble Large, Randomness: 70%, Pressure: 25%, Length: 70%, Rotation: -, Brush Size: 80%, Amount: 20%
