Artist's Description

Let’s talk about Sappho. While most of her poetry is now lost and much of her life is a mystery, she was one of the Nine Lyric Poets (and if Hellenistic Alexandrian scholars thought she was great, who are we to disagree?!), and the fragments we have of her work include many stunning quotes—like the one in this design. This quote, calling us to be good to those spirits of music and poetry within us, reminds us to love the creative sides of ourselves and of others. What more do you need?

Love the artwork? Me, too! Here’s the deets: This is a fresco, which was commonly held to be Sappho (and we now realize, well, is not—it’s of a wealthy Pompeian girl with accounting docs), found in 1760. Right now, it’s in the collection of the brilliant National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
