Artist's Description

The ABT Railway runs between Queenstown and Strahan – locomotives use the ABT system (named after Swiss engineer Carl Roman Abt) to engage the centre racked rail along the very steep gradient from Queenstown to Dubbil Barril. The line was built in two stages – the first being opened in 1892 – to transport copper from the mine at Queenstown to market. It remained the only way to reach Queenstown until 1932 when a road link to Hobart was completed. Now dubbed the West Coast Wilderness Railway_, it operates just for tourists.
