Artist's Description

Each year many pairs of loons loose their nesting site due to fluctuating water levels. To help alleviate this problem, some waterfront property owners have built floating platforms which are anchored in safe locations to help the birds along with their nesting.
The nest in this photo is situated on such a platform and has been used repeatedly for a number of years now. Each year the property owner in this particular case waits for both loons to return in the spring, then goes out on the water in his boat and puts some nesting material (grass, reeds etc.) on the platform. In two cases, one of the loons was on the platform before he was able to return to shore .
Information on how to build nesting platforms can usually be obtained from your local department for Natural Resource Management .

Photo taken on Lake of the Woods, near Kenora, Ontario, Canada.
