Student Assignment-Designer Profile "John Dicandia"

John Dicandia is an artist living in Melbourne, Victoria. He says “…there is nothing in the world that beats burning the midnight oil on a drawing or painting you want to get right.”

His hometown offers a wealth of ideas but much of his inspiration emanates from the dizzy world of pop culture and history. He enjoys sharing his work with people around the world since he believes it is his own way of communicating his love for humanity and different cultures. He doesn’t make money for what he does and believes in the cliché of ‘Art’s for art’s sake’.

He creates incredible paint artworks and also dabbles in photography and film, and in addition is also in the process of publishing his very first novel after 5 long arduous years.

His work portrays mostly detailed drawings, sketches and paintings of women. Some are even of famous, glamorous women and girls that he paints in detail.e.g Shirley temple and Grace Kelly. He is a very relative artist to our group as we are name ‘forever famous’ and are about elegant, famous women of the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s

This sketch of Shirley Temple was of immediate interest for me. Not only is it creative and incredibly well drawn, but the patterns and various drawings in the background portray a whole different effect. It is a sketch of Shirley Temple and it is in greeting card form. John drew Shirley looking away from the camera, on a side on view and it is in black, with a blue tinge as a background. Shirley is not smiling and has her hair tied up. There are miscellaneous patterns and drawings on the background. There are also love hearts drawn on her dress.
