Artist's Description

The John Day River, below Sheep Rock, provides irrigation water to grow grass to raise cattle today. 1860-1900 Sheepherders used to scour the hills with thousands of domestic sheep for sale as wool fiber & mutton. These domestic sheep brought a “black Lung worm” that transferred to mountain sheep killing off entire herds.
