Artist's Description

This photo was taken while I was staying in a small village in Fiji. The women of the village cleaned their clothes by washing them in the river- where so much of their time was spent. The river was the source of food, the place where one bathed and washed & the demarcation point by which one was either “inside the village” or “outside the village”. Different rules applied in regards to how one dressed or how one behaved based on what side of the river they were on. I found that fascinating.

From the looks of the pile behind her, it looks like this girl had a big job ahead of her.
