le Fay (or Rusalka)

She shifted restlessly in her chair, longing for a chance to escape. Moving her gaze to the window, she stared at the trees bordering the rear of the property. Ivana rose, as if in a trance, to leave her quarrelling friends sitting at the kitchen table. She had almost reached the tree line before they noticed where she was headed. Before they could react, she disappeared into the mass of trees.

Ivana did not stop to peer at her surroundings, but kept heading towards the noise. She pushed a branch from her face and broke onto a clearing, taking several moments to take in the full beauty of the waterfall. Pausing at the edge of the lagoon, she executed a neat dive into its cool depths.
After a few moments, Ivana climbed out of the spring and toppled onto the grass, promptly falling into a contented slumber.
She awoke groggily when sunlight no longer fell on her upturned face. Opening her eyes, she let out a small gasp of terror as the eyes staring back at her began to flash.

An unearthly scream interrupted the plans being made around the table. The group gave each other a stricken look and a cry arose from the circle, ‘Ivana!’ Selina was the first out the door and had scaled the fence before the others could collect their wits. Fighting her way through the scrub, she blindly followed the scream still ringing in her ears. She burst into the clearing, taking only a moment to find the scream’s origin.
Selina spun to warn Peter and the others not to enter the clearing at the precise moment which they did. A gasp rose from the small group and Peter rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside the sprawled Ivana and tears fell silently down his cheeks. The rest of the group gathered around their mutilated friend with looks of disbelief.

A pair of yellow eyes watched the scene unfold from the undergrowth, soundlessly disappearing as shrieks and sobs filled the still air.
