The Last

How could you let me go?
For a moment there, I imagined you were right beside me again.
Your sadness stirs my heart . . .

Why did you not fight for it?
Was it not worthy of your assurance?

I don’t believe that . . .
It cannot be true . . . .
Do you not see that these last fragmented moments together will be our very last?
The very core of our purpose, our meaning, our togetherness
Can you not feel the cold and trembling tears trickle down my cheek?
Is it not pain that you feel as you watch me walk away?

Hold my hand
Don’t watch me leave
Don’t shun away the last drop of me that yearns to be with you

Could this moment be real?
Must I succumb to this end?
Then let this be my last . . .

Let it be
