Artist's Description

When Jonny and I were driving in the wilds of Donegal we came upon this abandoned school house in the middle of nowhere. There were no houses nearby and we were quite a distance from any village or town. It was situated in a bleak and barren landscape with views over the Atlantic. There seemed to be just two classrooms and a little outside toilet facility. It was so atmospheric. It was not difficult to imagine young children in rural Ireland sitting in these classrooms listening to the howling winds outside and looking out at the grey mountains surrounding them as they tried to learn Irish, a very difficult language. On a summers day it would have been quite idyllic with purple heather carpeting the rock strewn fields nearby. It reminded me of the school house in the Oscar winning film ’Ryan’s Daughter’ with Robert Mitchum as the ageing schoolmaster. I have just taken one part of the front wall as an image of this building, the rest is up to your imagination.
