Artist's Description

I had for years read about this beautiful medieval hill town of San Gimignano in Tuscany. It more than lived up to my expectations. The town sits in an elevated position and the approaching road winds its way through the vineyards. It is a town full of delights, from the buildings, the little artisan shops, the restaurants and cafes and the main feature of the place, these wonderful towers which have soared into the sky since the middle ages. Not all of them can be climbed but the tallest one standing can. I had to climb the tallest one of course and I was not disappointed. The staircases are very wide to begin with and it is only when you reach the very top that you are reduced to using something closely resembling a metal ladder to get you right to the very top where the bell is situated. Nevertheless it is perfectly manageable if you take your time and possibly your doctor if he is willing to accompany you on such an escapade.

Taken on a visit to Tuscany in 2008
