Artist's Description

I had always planned to visit Tuscany with my friend Paul who very sadly and suddenly died five years ago at the too young age of 55. We used to sit in the evenings and plan the places we would visit. We had a long list but San Gimignano was right at the top with Florence and Siena. At exactly the same time five years ago my friend Liz lost her partner again at the too early age of 57.
Both of us decided to go to Tuscany the following year using some of the money we had been left. We rented a gorgeous villa in the tiny hamlet of Iano in the heart of the Tuscan countryside. Iano put us in the centreof a triangle with Volterra, Florence and Siena with San Gimignano only 25 minutes away by car. The lady who owned the villa lived in a gorgeous converted Tuscan barn and everyday she supplied us with fresh produce and we were able to pick out own figs from the trees for breakfast. There were hedges of rosemary bushes planted around our ground floor villa which I used to pick and place with some of the organic potatoes supplied by the owner in some hot virgin olive oil and roast them for dinner . My friend was quite content to sit by the pool in the peace and serenity of the autumn sunshine while I headed off in the car to explore. I had never driven unaccompanied on the continent on the other side of the road but it never seemed daunting as the roads were fairly quiet and the other drivers were very careful.
The first time I saw San Gimignano and these gleaming towers in the distance, I stopped the car and got out and just sat at the side of the road for ages. I could hardly believe that I was looking at the place I had longed to see for so many years. A few tears were shed as well for the absent friends but it was all very peaceful and just as I had imagined it.
San Gimignano lived up to all my expectations and more but that is for another day.
I hope I have not bored you with my ramblings but one of the reasons I like Red Bubble so much, is that I can link some text to a photograph and it will be there for me to return to whenever I feel nostalgic, which is quite often.
