Artist's Description

Part of the Fountain Of Neptune which stands in the Piazza della Signoria. It was built as a tribute to the second marriage of the second Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francesco I de’ Medici. You will find that great detail was paid to this fountain because the detail is just incredible. You won’t see anything like it anywhere else.
The concept of the fountain was created by Bartolommeo Bandinelli. However, he died shortly after the model was finished. That is when the job of creating the fountain fell into the laps of Bartolomeo Ammannati and Giambologna, his assistant.
When looking at this fountain, you will find that there is a figure of Neptune, who is the Greek God of water. However, he has the face of the first Grand Duke of Tuscany. This was chosen in order to portray the ruling power of the Medicis and of the Tuscan people over the seas. Neptune is on top of a high pedestal in the middle of the fountain. You’ll see Greek sea monster interpretations all over the pedestal. However, it wasn’t a fountain at first. It was just a statue. The people of Florence complained because they said it looked like a waste of white marble. That is when the fountain was added. It took ten years to finish the statue. In the midst of this, there were many other sculptors who participated in its finished design.
This wonderful piazza has been a sculpture gallery since the 14th century and I hope to show some more of the marvellous work that is on view here.
