Artist's Description

This oil painting is accompanied by lines of free verse:

Perched on a naked branch
Guarding his territory
The cardinal is majestic and red,
The colour of blood.
In flight he is elegant
And swift.
But now he is still.
Perched on a naked branch
The cardinal casts a watchful eye
Over the horizon.
Midnight clouds rush past,
Carrying the darkness away.
The cardinal meditates
Upon the passing of the night,
Upon the turbulence that boded evil,
Upon his unassailability.
He does not sense the danger,
But it is there.
Preying claws pluck him from his branch
And bear him to his bloody end.
He has no time to sing.
