flightless birds

flightless birds
stuffed in 1922
dust gathering on the ground
wings without reason
they never close their eyes
although the lights
in the display cases
are dim
they still see me
through the portal of time
maybe they can travel
beyond death
and over the great distance
between what was and has been
and the now where i can stand
gathering dust
without wings
waiting to be seen again
locked up in the corner
of this museum
i can finally see
their wings
and hear their calls
of freedom
as they finally take flight

flightless birds
