to set the raft sailing onwards

close my eyes when
i finally give it up
and place the coins
so that the boney man
can take me the right way
out of this cavernous place

show my spirit a guide
burn candles in the evening
so that my ghost
will no longer haunt the home
where the happy words
were epitaphs on yellow walls

turn me over
like a mattress worn out
and take my golden teeth
for the payment will be steep
to get me out of purgatory
to set that raft sailing onwards

just keep the coins
and strip the skin for leather
the heart for meat
to feed the demons waiting there
for they are hungry
and wanting more of whatever
scraps are left of me now

to set the raft sailing onwards
