Artist's Description

Anavatos-this is a Byzantine Castle, long since abandoned and in ruins. Location: The Central Mountains of Chios Island, Greece.
Anavatos has a rather bloody and sad history. During the Greek Uprising for Independance in 1821 it is estimated that 2000-2500 persons jumped to their deaths to get away from the Turks whom had overun the castle. An eerie place, even in daytime, as one walks through the rubble, one can hear the claking of swordblades, and the screams of the victums, as they run for safety…

in modern times, the upper part of the castle is completely uninhabited, in fact it is an Archeological Site, while there are some summer homes and one cafe at the foot of the site. Anavatos as a city, is no more; however most every tourist who comes to Chios Island visits, learns the story, and thus pays a rememberance to those victums on both sides…

This photo is of an original Acrylic painting, as it hung in one of my exhibitions here in Chios. The original is a gift to the town of Anavatos, and to the organization of the “friends of Anavatos”-which will at some point be hung in the Traditional/Cultural Museum of Anavatos (still under construction).
