Artist's Description

I had gone into the local park [Ashton Gardens] with the view of capturing some autumn colours and was walking past a succession of park benches, only some of which were occupied. These two ladies were enjoying the gentle sunshine on a very mild day and I was struck by the wonderful, warm sidelighting on their faces.

I quickly moved to the seat opposite and appeared to fiddle with my camera for a few moments until they lost interest in me. During my apparent disinterest in them I had fitted an angle finder to my camera, focussed and composed and then laid the camera on my knees waiting for the ‘decisive moment’.

As the lady on the right drifted off, the lady on the left continued to talk and, upon getting no response, turned to her friend. The sound of the Canons’ shutter slapping was like a thunderclap compared to the silent operation of the Ricoh and I cringed, thinking that it may have spoiled the day for them. They continued as if nothing had happened and I relaxed.

I forget what she actually said but I like to think I’ve titled the picture correctly and told the whole story in one instant. I was no longer interested in the fall colours, the light on the two ladies’ faces had made my day and I hurriedly went home to see what I had captured.

It was only later did I put together the whole story in my head. The sensible shoes. Parallel walking sticks, resting on the bench to their left. Grey hair, similarly cut and permed. Leaves on the ground and ladies on the bench, each in the autumn of their lives.

Street photography and the capturing of candid photos of your fellow human beings as they go about their lives is strangely compelling, addictive even. It’s also very relaxing. Newcomers to it usually get very anxious about being ‘caught in the act’ when, in fact, I find it to be quite the opposite.

I feel absolutely no pressure to have to ‘deliver the goods’ like I do when I invest hours to get a landscape or seascape. Sometimes I go out and never press the shutter button – merely because I see nothing which makes a whole story in one instant.

That’s not to say that I see nothing of interest, quite the opposite, I ALWAYS see something of interest, I just choose not to capture it because the moments either side of the image complete the story and it would be meaningless without them.

The best images always seem to happen when you go unnoticed and have no influence on the scene. Sometimes the subject happens to look your way at the critical moment but these are few and far between. Even if they do, it doesn’t matter, they’d probably do it if you weren’t there.

Almost all of my street images are taken with a 28mm lens which means getting really close to your subject without them noticing. It doesn’t always work that way of course but people seem to dismiss the possibility of someone taking their picture from so close.

I take Street Photographs for me alone, I just post them here because I think some will work for you too – even though you weren’t there. I hope they do.
