Hiding in the shattered remnant’s of a place that was once safe, a small group of gaunt orphans hovered, faces obscured by the grime of their lost haven. A flame from a single candle hovered in the center of the room, giving the walls a stark look that was well fit to the aura of defeat. It sputtered violently in an almost unfelt gust, the slight heave and silent change in the air. A sigh. The last echo’s fading off the crumbling walls, causing their heart beats to flutter. So attuned to the sounds of silence, and the shifting of the sands that created the only flooring to the room. No one moved or spoke, breathing silent. The virtue of patience placed upon them. Feral eyes fixed on the constantly shifting shadows. Forsaken for the moment by the dark captors that they all feared, a sudden sound, soft in the long since unused ears pierced the deathly still air. A scream. Bloody murder. It rose and fell with a horrible musical quality. The madness that they all seemed to suppress breaking out in a primal shriek a corrupt need for release. Slowly, two men came, unchaining the girl from wall. Black hair clenched tight in a fist as she was dragged along. She didn’t even fight them, eyes desperately darting to her companions, watching their indifference with terror. There was nothing they could do. Black flooded her right iris, while the other remained stained green. Not a single gleam of hope to be found. The sun slowly rose over those who still sat bound. Tears now slipping free silently.

She never came back.
