Artist's Description

It took me back to my early 20s. I had decided I’d like to join the merchant navy. The careers people said I should try going on the trawlers to gain experience of the sea.So I went off to Lowestoft and spent a week in the fishing vessel owners college (for want of a better word). I remember the day I arrived. The thief of Baghdad was on at the local fleapit (and that’s singing its praises) I wasted a couple of hours watching it..Sabu was singing “I want to be a sailor”.
I thought it was prophetic.
After a week learning how to read a ships compass and mend fishing nets, I went down to join my trawler. The crew was assembled and I introduced myself. The cook, a wall eyed man with long lank greasy hair, slapped his hands on my hips and said “You’ll accommodate me” Now I know I had been told you should be nice to the ships cook, but I thought that was beyond the call of duty. (After 15 days on board however, he was beginning to look like a good proposition). Any how, I braved storm force 10 seas and learned to gut fish. I also ran out of cigarettes on the first day. (They don’t have duty free on trawlers.)
How can I describe the experience? I can’t. It haunts me still.
Seeing these boats brought it all back. I went to the quayside and threw up.
