Artist's Description

This was shot in March 2005 in the small village of Bati, Eastern Ethiopia and land of the Afar people. This guy, hardly expressing his feelings, was holding a Kallassnikov. I was excited with the thought of having him on a photo but at the same time didn’t know what he was thinking. He kept staring. I had to move quickly, thank him and smile politely, of course not directly in the eyes. At that time I didn’t have a digital camera and I was a real beginner in photography. When I saw this take I felt lucky!

Camera Nikon F80, Lens Sigma 70-300
Fuji Velvia ISO 100
