Artist's Description

Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) flowering in August in the Blue Mountains National Park, New South Wales, Australia. This image was taken along the walking track which follows the old Lockyer’s Road near Mount Victoria. Lockyer’s Road was an early attempt (1828/29) to construct a road down from the Blue Mountains into the western plains. It was never completed.

It is widely believed that the national colours of Australia, green and gold, were chosen because they are the dominant colours of the Golden Wattle, which is Australia’s floral emblem.
