Artist's Description

The history and fortunes of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, through the eyes of its staple industry – the herring. The waves show whether it is having a high or low period. It begins with a major medieval port – note the Minster used to have a spire, and its town walls still survive as the best in the East of England. It shows wherries – the flat transportation boats – and then the early seaside resort, as depicted by its Edwardian circus (still used); after another slump, it became the big rides and typical if tacky seaside we know and love it for today – note the early rollercoaster. And then there’s a whoosh towards the future, which I hope sees regeneration.
