The inn stands on the bank of the River tyne, at Newburn.
Untill the Bridge was built in the late 19th century, anyone wanting to cross over the river had to wait untill low tide and cross via a shallow ford, or use the rowed, ferry from the Inn
Newburn was a thriving village for many centuries, the Roman army first crossed the tyne here in the 1st century AD. Now with the expansion of the City of Newcastle, Newburn has become a suburb.
