Artist's Description

Common Scaly Foot Pygopus lepidopodus.

One of Australia’s amazing legless lizards, this species is renowned for its mimicry of the Eastern Brown Snake, a venomous elapid. This animal was trapped in during a recent fauna survey. The cloth bag in the background was used to provide refuge to this animal during the photo session. The ‘stance’ shown in this image, is typical of the Eastern Brown Snake when feeling under threat. This animal is actually a lizard and not dangerous whatsoever.

Photographer: Steve Sass.
Camera: Fuji A800, macro.
Location: North-west of Wollongong, NSW in dense heath.
