The Black Dog

The Black Dog hides in the shadows, unseen by most.
He tags along unbidden, a heavy burden at one’s heels
Sometimes he sniffs out something old and rotten, buried years before
And then parades about with it with glee.

The Black Dog dislikes sunlight and games
Preferring musty darkened rooms
A place devoid of movement, of life, of hope.
He growls and grows larger in the darkness.

Years may have seen the Black Dog tamed
He may no longer be leading every which way
Following on old tracks best left alone.
He is tamed…or is he?

For if he is tamed, why is it he can rise
Savage in attack and merciless to the end
As those hounded by the Black Dog are
Claimed by him once more.
