Gravity

She stood shakily, and then despite her good intentions, toppled to the floor. Damn, she thought. Not again. Now there’s the long process to become upright again. Damn that gravity. Every ounce of her strength was required to lift herself into that upright position. By the time she got there, nothing was left to keep her vertical. All her strength was gone. Again. Damn, damn, damn.

Once upon a time, gravity was something that no-one much thought about. It just was, and that was it. Now, it’s effect infiltrated every action one needed to take. Who could have foretold that the effect of global warming was to increase gravity. But looking back, it did make sense. After all, as things heat up, they move faster, and so the world now moves faster. Gravity had to increase, otherwise in this fast fast hot world every one and every thing would have been spun off into space.

Or so the scientists say. Many no longer believed anything the scientists had to say any more. But really, that was all academic when it had got to the point when trying to stand upright was almost an impossibility. Who cared about why, when they were so busy trying to deal with the how. How to get through the day without injury from others falling on them, as they tried unsuccessfully to defy gravity.
