Backlit juvenile Gum Leaf, Silvertop Ash (Eucalyptus sieberi), East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Young leaves of this species start out a deep maroon/purple color (in refective light). Backlit they appear red like this. As the leaf matures it fills out to green all over. Dieing leaves change back to red again. This photo was taken looking toward the sun in late afternoon light with forest in the background in deep shade. Finding one leaf in near perfect condition in a sea of leaves at the right moment before disappearing into patchy moving shadows and with such great colors is something I’ve never been able to repeat again.
