Artist's Description

The grey mangrove (Avicennia marina) is the only species of mangrove in South Australia. It grows along the shores of the Barker Inlet, Port River, Gulf St Vincent, Spencer Gulf and on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula. Coastal mangrove forests provide important nursery, feeding and breeding habitat for fish and crustaceans. They also support bird life and protect against coastal erosion.
Threats to mangrove health include: urban development, sewage, stormwater and industrial discharges and run-off from agricultural and urban sources. A major oil spill in Upper Spencer Gulf in 1992 impacted large areas of grey mangroves, killing or defoliating trees that were heavily oiled. Other threats include roots and seedlings being trampled by people and sea level rise caused by climate change.
