Artist's Description

This Statue is in the Mirabell Garden in Salzburg Austria

Persephone, daughter of Demeter, was abducted and taken by Pluto (Hades) into the Underworld, where she becomes his wife and Queen. After a long search ,where everything plant- like on Earth died. Her mother finds her. Pleading with Zeus also known as Jupiter, who is the top god she was allowed to bring her daughter Persephone back to the upper world, which lived anew, and thus Persephone is also the Goddess of Spring and summer. This cycle is repeated yearly.
It was Zeus (Jupiter) who ordered that she should spend six months of the year above ground with her mother. Zeus had ruled that Persephone could be granted complete release if she had abstained from food in the underworld, but she had consumed a pomegranate seed that Pluto /Hades offered her….. which I am sure she enjoyed, a bit of role reversal here…The apple and the pomegranate. Therefore six months above and six months below.
The myth symbolizes the growth and decay of vegetation and the changing seasons.
It is, in my opinion a very symbolic and potent myth on many levels. Great inner journey for both male and female…
