SETTLERS

One could not have forseen the hardships..or the agony at hand
when these settlers were transported to this bleak and distant land
the wilderness that greeted them was alarming and so stark
but through the desolation..they laboured to make their mark
they had no knowledge of farming..they`d been sent to do their time
and judged by man and jury..this was punishment for their crime
each and every one of them were given a piece of land
on which they had to live and grow..and dig each inch by hand
but the earth was unrelenting..its soil did little yield
regardless they toiled on..planting each and every seed
so many souls did perish..as they laboured from dusk till dawn
but for every one that left the earth…another would be born
and the hardships did continue through the many years that passed
in turn each generation..left a mark that would forever last
and looking back at where it began..and what was then endured
is why our place in this great land…today..has been assured
