My name is Nathaniel Gillette, I’m an artist/art student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago studying sound, video, and graphic art, in that order. I’m interested in semiotics, which is the study of how meaning is created and evoked.
Graphically, I find myself particularly moved by what I see as visceral aspects of images: vibrant colors, intense contrast, and gritty details.
In my work I attempt to recreate the sensations I’ve experienced at various moments in my life, most often when I am lucky enough to have my camera ready enough to capture some visual aspect of my sensory experience. In that regard, I rarely stage photographs to evoke a feeling.
I hope you enjoy my work in a way that suits you.
