Artist's Description

An Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus) heading to the next group of fisherman for a cheap feed. Bermagui Harbour, NSW, Australia. Interesting Australian Pelican fact 1: the generic name, Pelecanus comes from the latin and means spectacled which refers to the bare skin around the eye of these birds. The specific name conspicillatus refers, no doubt, to the big a conspicuous bill! It was named by Temminck, a Dutch zoologist who had a whole stack of animals named after him, in 1824. See Australian Pelican 2 for interesting fact 2.
