Artist's Description

This male Crimson Finch Neochmia phaeton with nesting material was oblivious to our approach as we floated by. He and the female bird were pulling strips of paper-bark Malaleuca spp. off the trees in the enormous wetland that comprises Yellow Waters Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, Australia. We watched for ages as the first structures of the nest were woven together after much trial and error. I hope that they succeeded in their attempt to have babies!
