Artist's Description

The early transportation history in America is shown at the C&O Canal. Over 180 miles and operating for nearly 100 years the canal was a lifeline for communities along the Potomac River as coal, lumber and agricultural products floated down the waterway to market. In the photo are mules as an example of the pulling of barges along the canal.
