Original Photo

This is my translation of Christine Wilson’s lovely photo: Portsea Pier for SoJie12’s Workshop.

WORK IN PROGRESS PHOTOS

Unlike my first SoJie12 workshop painting: Portrait In The Rock. With work deadlines to meet and, a challenging photo to boot, I felt very pressured (yes, very), but at the same time, very determined to finish. So, here goes…

The first thing and only thing that came to me when I first saw this photo was, a feeling of loss, loneliness, and longing, for a loved one, while at the same time having a sense of hope. That feeling of loss and simultaneous hope and/or faith is what I tried to depict here.

I tried to do this by, introducing a lone figure standing at the pier with, her hand gesturing upwards in despair longing but, desperately hoping for the return of a missing or lost loved one or, waiting to be found/saved herself. I also tried to translate more feeling by introducing forms and symbols into the sky and seascape as best as I could without loosing the original natural scene.

This is also a tribute to all those who are lost at sea and, for those who have lost someone at sea (suggested by Sally Sargent’s wonderful comment)

Philippians 4:13

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
