Martin Luther influenced Christmas traditions, in both northern and southern Germany.

In general, the Christkindl …or Christ-child… always seemed to be the tradition in Catholic southern Germany and the Weihnachtsmann seemed to be the Lutheran tradition in northern Germany. But it was not always so…early in the 16th century there was no Christkindl tradition… the established tradition for all Christians was that Sankt Nikolaus (St. Nicholas) was the gift bringer on December 6th and there were no gifts on Christmas Eve.…

Even more surprising to me is that the Christkindl gift bringer tradition was first introduced by Martin Luther. His motivation was to explicitly discourage the figure of St. Nicholas, along with the concept of Saints all together, and thus he introduced the Christ-child as the unseen gift bringer and changed the date of giving gifts from December 6th to Chr

Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD

Ancient Rome’s persistent attempts to subjugate Magna Germania were permanently halted after the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD… After this decisive German victory, the Emperor Augustus, according to the Roman historian Suetonius, was so shaken that he stood butting his head against the walls of his palace, repeatedly shouting: "Quintili Vare, legiones redde!“ (‘Quintilius Varus, give me back my legions!’). Augustus ordered a Roman withdrawal from all of Magna Germania (completed by AD 16) and established the boundary of the Roman Empire as being the Rhine and the Danube.

Kaiserzeit of 1871 to 1918

The German Second Reich prospered from the synergy of almost all German states merged into one new nation in 1871 and from the 47 years of peace that followed in Europe…leading to a German Empire that was an industrial, technological, and scientific giant. Germany gained more Nobel Prizes in science than Britain, France, Russia, and the United States combined…a matter of pride for every one of German heritage.

German Americans

The first thing to know is that German Americans comprise about 50 million people, making them the largest self-reported ancestry group in the US…more than English Americans (26 million), more than Irish Americans (33 million), and more than African Americans (42 million).

Distribution of German Americans according to the 2000 Census… California, Texas and Pennsylvania have the largest numbers of people with German heritage…Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota have the highest proportion of German Americans… more than one-third of all residents are of German heritage.

Washington Crossing the Delaware

A German artist named Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze memorialized the dramatic event of Washington Crossing the Delaware. Leutze conceived the idea for this famous painting during the German Revolutions of 1848. He was hoping to encourage Germany’s liberal reformers through the example of the American Revolution.
