Buddy speaks to Inga Coyote

I was awakened at 3:45 Am by the eerie sound of a Coyote yelping, barking and Yodeling. We hear coyotes sounding off nearly every evening, but usually they shut up after five or ten minutes. This lone coyote kept the high pitched barking and yelping up for three hours. It sounded like it was right outside of my bedroom window. I looked outside and could see a lone coyote in the dim light of the waning moon. Our Australian Sheep dog, Buddy, was barking at this coyote, but not in his loud bark that signals “Danger”. It was his soft bark that he uses to greet other dogs and people.

I got up and turned on our yard lights. I recognized the Coyote as Inga, A lone Coyote that likes Buddy and likes to visit him from time to time. Buddy was begging to go outside so I let him out and watched him through the window. He walked right up to Inga Coyote and they danced around each other in the way dogs do when they greet one another. Coyotes eat dogs, but Buddy is the kind of dog that can do a coyote in, if he needed to.

Buddy said, Hi ya Inga, Long time no see! How are you sweetheart?

Inga answered, Howdy Buddy. What took you so long to come out to see me?

Buddy said, “Pappa Eddie and Uncle Denny don’t like to let me out with wild coyotes.”

What’s a coyote? asked Inga.

That’s what the Man Pack calls your kind Inga.

Inga answered, Well I’ll be darned! I didn’t know that.

You woke up the Man Pack with all your barking and yipping Inga! Buddy said.

Inga said, I just had to speak to you Buddy.

Well, here I am, so What’s on your mind, Buddy answered.

Inga whimpered a bit as she said, The Yodel dog pack doesn’t want me with them anymore. I was supposed to lure you out into the Enchanted Forest so they could bump you off. They said you are a problem for them because you won’t let them get near the Man Pack’s dens so they can eat puppies, kittens and chickens. They want to bump you off Buddy so you won’t stop them from having dinner.

Do you want me bumped off Inga, Buddy asked.

“Heck no Buddy! I love you. I want to have your puppies.”

Buddy said, The Man Pack doesn’t want dogs to make puppies with coyotes. They call the babies Coydogs. They are looked down on by the Man Pack and sometimes killed when found.

Oh that’s so sad, said Inga.

What happened to your baby, Goldie, that used to come here last year, Buddy asked.

Oh, she went off with the Yodel Dog Pack. (Coyotes) They are eating bugs, small birds, ducks, cats, puppies, dogs and whatever else they can find for food,
They don’t want me because they said I’m too friendly with you Buddy. Oscar, my ex-mate said he would kill me if I didn’t get away from the Yodel dog pack, Inga said in a whimpering voice.

Buddy said, I hear Pappa Eddie calling me. I have to go now. Uncle Denny put a bowl of cat food out. You can have some.

Oh thank you Buddy. You are a true friend. I’m starved. I’ll have some of that cat food instead of eating your alley cat tonight.

Buddy said, Boston Blackie the cat is my friend. I don’t want you eating him. Please don’t bark anymore tonight. You are upsetting the Man Pack. Look each night in the cat’s food bowl and there will be food for you.

Buddy came back into the house and Inga coyote ate from the bowl of cat food before she made her way back into the Enchanted Forest. She barked no more that night. Ed Henzi
