A New Course

I watched the ducks since their first swim in front of the dock
Struggling to keep up with their mother as she smoothly sped along
Every day she led them by as if to show them off to the world
All five of the little ones followed her in single file
Creating a calming ripple of a wake across the placid glass water

It was always the one in the very middle
I knew he was not like all the rest
Every day he uncomfortably followed the others
He did not belong
I did not sense it from his physical appearance
But rather by the way the creature looked not only ahead
To where he followed his proud mother
But also across the lake, to realms yet unexplored

It came to little surprise to me on that day
As the middle duck shifted its glance once more
From the feathered backside of its kin in front
Those beady eyes were drawn to the expanse of the other side
I could tell he longed for it

The other ducks must have been expecting it too
For when he casually peeled away from the line
None of the others even turned an eye
As he set out on a new, welcoming course
His own course
Trailed only by his lone, serene wake
His beady eyes set on his new frontier
Following the reflection of the rising sun
On the friendly waters waiting ahead
