Artist's Description

On the coast of the Isle of Skye just below the town of Staffin and looking out over the Sound of Raasay are the remains of this old Diatomite mine.
Known to the locals as ‘Caile’ (Gaelic for chalk), Diatomite is a clay-like floury grey substance, found in certain freshwater lochs and supplying many minerals used in the production of numerous products, ranging from beverages, sugars and cosmetics to chemicals, industrial oils and paint.
