Artist's Description

Tower of the Winds

Or Compass Point Tower as it is also known.
Sitting on the Penhalt cliffs above Bude in North Devon the tower rises over 110 feet about sea level.
Erected in 1830s this octagonal building was originally a storm tower.
Inscripted on each side there is a compass point which originally gave the correct points of the compass but when the cliffs began to erode in its original location the tower was dismantled and moved to its present position.Regrettably the compass points no longer refer to the correct position.
On our recent visit there I wondered how long it will be before it has to be moved once again as the cliffs are eroding quite badly.
