Artist's Description

The Conventual Franciscans arrived in Malta prior to 1347 and their church and friary were built near St Francis Hospital, which became the Santo Spirito hospital and now houses national archives. The friary was rebuilt in 1640, and the church was so severely damaged in the 1693 earthquake that it had to be rebuilt in 1701. The noted Maltese Baroque architrct Lorenzo Gafà (1638-1704) was responsible for the reconstruction.
