Little Things Make You Think

Have you ever wondered about the little things that effect how we act, think and communicate with one another? Did you know that the color of a room can effect our mood? For example, hospitals use the color green to calm patients before surgeries, football teams paint their opponents locker room pink to lower their strength and aggression. The color red is used as an aphrodisiac, symbolizing passion, love, sex and power.

But, of course, these colors are not always used in ‘positive’ ways; If the color is too light or too dark, if the light effects the cornea keeping it from absorbing it correctly or a vision problem is present, the human brains reaction to the color may be varied. The color red, if incorrectly absorbed can be a trigger for aggression. Green is associated with being sick, or poison (Think Mr. Ick stickers to keep kids away from dangerous products).

The only downfall to using these strategies on an everyday basis is that the colors psychological effects seem to work only on the initial exposure. For example, a doctor meeting with a long list of patients may have painted his waiting room walls green to increase his patients patience (no pun intended), but after a certain amount of time, the effect wears off and sometimes with a ‘doubling’ effect; Meaning that instead of starting at a mild frustration, the feelings come back two fold, feeling irritated and storming out. So, it is safe to say that in order for these strategies to work to their fullest, repeated, short exposures are ideal.
